Distinctive Features of German Beer Steins
At the onset reasons for production of beer steins was combating outrage of Bubonic Plague. To implement proper sanitation beer holder were made with lid that could be opened with thumb. Such a lid helped to prevent insect manifestation & also improved taste as well as quality of the German beer. Thus, concept of steins originated from that time and started to gain popularity quite rapidly.
In the beginning these were made from stones but as time progressed different materials started being used like glass, silver and porcelain. Germans have mastered the art of creation of these steins and gradually the concept has spread to other countries. Beer steins are different from beer mugs as steins have lid on them while mugs don’t. These look very much like jugs which is the meaning of a stein in German.
Larger in size compared to ceramic mugs or coffee mugs, these are normally handmade with exquisite artwork on them and can be sometimes expensive to purchase. The pricing is dependent on how rare is the container and also on the kind of production technique which is used. These also have different designs etched on the outer side making them one of the most desired collectible items.
One distinctive feature of beer steins is that these are numbered & stamped with manufacturer’s label and originating country. At present there are few bars left which use these containers for serving beer. However, these help in creating a beautiful ambient atmosphere inside the bar. Nowadays they are used more as collectibles rather than for drinking beer.
