Special Features of Beer Glasses
Many of us think that there is not much difference between various beer glasses and all beer glassware is same. But after you taste beer in different glasses you will change your opinion. Here in the following sections we will look at various beer glasses and their features. These all are stemmed similar to wine glasses.
Goblet or Chalice
Goblets or Chalices are bowl shaped & large with main difference among them being of glass thickness. Normally, goblets are think & delicate while a chalice is heavy as well as thick. A chalice sometimes also has etched bottom for providing a carbonation or beading point thus creating a bubble stream. The advantage of these glasses is that they are suitable for those wide mouthed drinks. Drinker is also able to trace the aroma as the aroma does not get trapped in. Commonly they find their use in Belgian Styled Ales.
Oversized Wine Glasses
Many may think it is weird to drink beer in a wine glass of oversized shape. But actually these are most suited to serve Belgian Ales. The oversized shape helps in releasing the aroma perfectly. The advantage of using them is that they work as good replacement for a goblet or tulip glass and are suitable for IPA, Belgian & European Ales.
Flute Glass
It is most appropriate for serving fruit beers & Belgian Lambics. These flutes display carbonation, soft lacing & sparkling colors which are distinctively associated with such beers. The main difference between a Champaign glass & a Flute is that the stem is shorter in Flutes. They are suitable for use with German Lagers, European Pilsners, Lambics & German Ales.
Snifter
Typical use for a snifter is to serve cognac or brandy & is also ideal for use with strong ales. It has a body which is wide bowled & is also stemmed. The advantage is that it easily swirls & commonly used with Lambics, IPA & European Ales.
Tulip
Tulip traps aroma thereby creating an olfactory sensation. It consists of a bulbous middle section which has a top that flares out forming a lip and helps with head retention. Generally used with Ales, it enhances volatiles & also supports foamy heads.
So it is quite clear now that it is important to select a beer glass depending on the type of beer which is to be served.
