Various Kinds of Beer Glasses
Beer glasses previously called beer glassware has an important role to play in making the drink more enjoyable. Beer glasses are of different types and each one has a specific shape that is designed for use with a particular variety of beer. In this article we will look at different kinds of glasses and beer types with which they are used.
Beer Stein
A beer stein is normally a heavy container made from porcelain, silver or pewter. Most often you will find that these are decorated with detailed scrolling and other types of decoration such as precious stones. It also has a lid attached to it which can be lifted by the drinker. Nowadays these are used more for display purpose rather than drinking.
Wheat Beer Glass
These were developed in Germany and are also called Weizenbier. It is a large glass which can hold 18 ounces of the drink. It seems quite narrow bottomed with a wide top.
It is designed for use with pilsner beers. The beer glass is tall and shaped to have a wide mouth and narrow base and does not have any curves.
Flute Glass
This type of glass is used with wines such as Champagne but can also be used with Belgian lambic beers or beers which are flavored with fruit.
Pint Glass
It is related with English pub, the glass holds 1 imperial pint and often used for serving English stouts & ales. The size is short and the mouth is slightly larger compared to the base.
Tulip Glass
This beer glass was originally used for white wine. The shape is such that rim is to not large as the mid point is. This shape helps to retain the aroma in beers like Belgian & Scottish ales.
Becher & Stange
Both have cylindrical shape and are used for serving Altbier or Kolsch kind of beer. They hold similar quantity of beer with Becher being fatter & shorter compared to Stange.
Yard Glass
The name was given as it is about a yard tall with a round bottom & shaft becoming wide at the rim. Nowadays it is used more in drinking games rather than being used for normal beer drinking.
