Stemware is one form of drinkware which has a base and stands on its stem. Most commonly stemware or Glass Stemware is created from glass.

A Guide to Various Kinds of Stemware

A stemware is a type of glass which has a bowl and is attached to a stem and has a circular base at the bottom. Usually made from glass however you can also find them in ceramics. Essentially used to drink wines, sherrys, ports, liqueurs, aperitifs etc. The main feature of a stemware is the “Stem” as it helps in drinking wines correctly. It’s easier to swirl your red wine and keep your white wine cooler for long time by holding the stem. With each alcohol offering its distinctive blend of elements, aromas and flavors, serving them in the appropriate stemware glasses is vital.

1. Red Wine Glasses: These glasses have a broader bowl to release the aromas and flavors of the wine.
2. White Wine Glasses: These glasses are slightly narrow at the bowl to preserve the chillness of the white wine.
3. Champagne Flutes: These are elegantly long and have a narrow mouth to maintain the champagne’s unique carbonation.
4. Chalices and Goblets: These are large bowl shaped stemmed glasses, used to serve Belgian Ales, German bocks and other kinds of beers.
5. Snifters: These are also called Balloons and are shot stemmed glasses with a wide bowl and narrow mouth, used to serve Brandys, Whiskeys and Cognacs. The shape helps evaporate the flavors and capture the aromas.
6. Cocktail Glasses: These glasses are cone shaped bowls attached to the stem and have a flat base. The stem helps in keeping the cocktail cool and the wide bowl releases the aromatics. Mostly utilized for Martinis and Margaritas.
7. Cordial Glasses: These are either short stemmed or long stemmed and come in various colors, used to serve both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. 

Since glass stemwares are fragile, one must take care to clean it cautiously. Use a relatively little quantity of mild detergent on a soft cloth and wash with warm water to get rid of any odor left behind by the alcohol.

A good way to store stemware glasses are to store them where it would not be in contact with other items and never hang them upside down.
